“What Happened?”, focuses on an inevitability of existence, change. The constant flow of life washes all things away and whether this is welcome or not, it’s the way things are. Michael Rice addresses this theme, both as an agent of change, breaking through barriers and as one simply surrounded by it, swept up in the endless stream.
Rice uses a mix of swelling guitar, field recordings, and piano to display the beauty of transition. The airy movement, “The Last Time You Will Ever Call This Place Home”, representing unwelcome change, like the moment your childhood home has been gutted of all the trappings of the life you have known and you stand in an empty room for the last time. The second piece, “The Bird Fights Its Way Out Of The Egg”, a 13 minute journey from a kind of perfunctory existence, immersed in a technological hell, to a place of clarity, of enlightenment. It gives you the feeling of watching a storm pass, of emerging from a dense dark forest into the light or of simply letting go, being washed away. “What Happened?”, brings you through the fray and rewards you with the revelation of freedom, of release, and a kind of raw emotion that is both rare and indispensable.
